Hans Haug: The Chamber Works Featuring the Guitar
59,00 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Hans Haug (1900-1967) was a prominent composer and conductor in central Europe who collaborated with many concert artists, theater companies, dance troupes, and music festivals. His contribution to the literature for guitar is exemplary, with extensive usage of the guitar in orchestral works, as well as contributing to the literature for solo guitar, and most significantly, to chamber music featuring the guitar. Collaboration with prominent musicians including Andres Segovia, Konrad Ragossnig, Jose de Azpiazu, and Louise Walker led to Haug's working knowledge of the instrument, as well as the creation of his chamber works featuring the guitar in the last ten years of his life. This book traces the evolutionary approach to melody, harmony, and rhythm in both his solo works for guitar, as well as the published concert works for flute, oboe, and piano to establish "sylistic" guidelines for his chamber works featuring the guitar. His Harmony of Gravitation theory is outlined through interviews with former students of Haug, including composer/conductor Michel Rochat and guitarist Konrad Ragossnig. The book also serves as a performance guide for guitarists eager to perform Haug's works.

Ernst Stueckelberg

Ernst Carl Gerlach Stueckelberg (February 1, 1905, Basel - September 4, 1984, Geneva) was a Swiss mathematician and physicist. In 1927 Stueckelberg got his Ph. D. at Basel under August Hagenbach. He qualified as a university lecturer together with Konrad Bleuler under supervision from Gregor Wentzel at the University of Zürich. In 1934 he devised a fully covariant perturbation theory for quantum fields . To quote this paper, "The approach proposed by Stueckelberg was far more powerful, but was not adopted by others at the time". Now, despite its benefits, this approach has been all but forgotten. However, besides being explicitly covariant, Stueckelberg's methods avoid vacuum bubbles. See also here . Independently from Hideki Yukawa, he gave vector boson exchange as the theoretical explanation of the strong nuclear force in 1935. In 1938 he recognized that massive electrodynamics contains a hidden scalar, and formulated an affine version of what would become known as the Abelian Higgs mechanism.

Digital Philosophy
64,00 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Digital philosophy is a direction in philosophy and cosmology advocated by certain mathematicians and theoretical physicists, e.g., Gregory Chaitin, Edward Fredkin, Stephen Wolfram, and Konrad Zuse (see his Calculating Space). Digital philosophy grew out of an earlier digital physics (both terms are due to Fredkin), which proposes to ground much of physical theory in cellular automata. Specifically, digital physics works through the consequences of assuming that the universe is a gigantic Turing-complete cellular automaton. Digital philosophy is a modern re-interpretation of Gottfried Leibniz's monist metaphysics, one that replaces Leibniz's monads with aspects of the theory of cellular automata. Digital philosophy purports to solve certain hard problems in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of physics, since, following Leibniz, the mind can be given a computational treatment. The digital approach also dispenses with the non-deterministic essentialism of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory. In a digital universe, existence and thought would consist of only computation.

The Right to Wage War (jus ad bellum)
37,00 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

With De iure belli ac pacis libri tres (1625), the Dutch humanist and natural law philosopher Hugo Grotius (1583–1645) quickly became the greatest authority on international law (jus gentium) and on just war (bellum justum) in Europe for the next hundred years or so. By examining the theories of three largely unknown German scholars, Konrad Friedlieb, Valentin Alberti and Johann Wolfgang Textor, Andreas Harald Aure discusses dominant visions of international law and the right to go to war (jus ad bellum) in the Protestant parts of the Holy Roman Empire, two generations after Grotius wrote his magnum opus. The authors struggled with questions such as:– What may serve as right justification (cause) for war?– Can an offensive war be just?– Can a war be just on both sides?– Has a belligerent the right to pass through third-party territory?– Is there a right to wage war on behalf of people in foreign countries? Two chapters discuss the conceptual development of jus gentium (the law of nations). As an adherent of Thomas Hobbes’ systematic approach to law, Samuel Pufendorf (1632–1694) realigned jus gentium as natural law (jus naturale). The main topic of this book is a detailed account of the just conditions for war (jus ad bellum) among leading German scholars in the 17th Century, based on in-depth research of primary sources.
